GovÂerÂnors Island is a 172-acre island in the heart of New York HarÂbor. Just minÂutes from LowÂer ManÂhatÂtan and the BrookÂlyn waterÂfront by ferÂry, the Island is a popÂuÂlar and unique desÂtiÂnaÂtion with an award-winÂning park comÂpleÂmentÂed by dozens of hisÂtoric buildÂings, year-round eduÂcaÂtionÂal and culÂturÂal facilÂiÂties, a rich arts and culÂture proÂgram and 22-acre NationÂal MonÂuÂment manÂaged by the NationÂal Park Service.
LookÂing ahead, the long-term vision for GovÂerÂnors Island focusÂes on conÂtinÂuÂing to expand year-round pubÂlic access by enlivenÂing it with transÂforÂmaÂtive pubÂlic art and culÂture, extraÂorÂdiÂnary recreÂationÂal and open space, and research and eduÂcaÂtion dedÂiÂcatÂed to addressÂing the globÂal cliÂmate criÂsis. With unparÂalÂleled hisÂtoric, natÂurÂal and waterÂfront resources, GovÂerÂnors Island is a vibrant and conÂstantÂly evolvÂing resource for all New YorkÂers to enjoy.
Today three entiÂties act as stewÂards and advoÂcates: the Trust for GovÂerÂnors Island, the NationÂal Park SerÂvice and the GovÂerÂnors Island FounÂdaÂtion (forÂmerÂly the Friends of GovÂerÂnors Island).
