The ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥
The Trust for GovÂerÂnors Island is the 501(c)(3) non-profÂit orgaÂniÂzaÂtion creÂatÂed by the City of New York responÂsiÂble for the planÂning, operÂaÂtions and ongoÂing develÂopÂment of GovÂerÂnors Island. The Trust’s misÂsion is to realÂize the full potenÂtial of GovÂerÂnors Island for the inspiÂraÂtion and enjoyÂment of all New YorkÂers, demonÂstratÂing a bold vision for pubÂlic space.
Since its transÂfer from fedÂerÂal to local conÂtrol in 2003, GovÂerÂnors Island has underÂgone one of the most remarkÂable transÂforÂmaÂtions in New York City’s hisÂtoÂry. The Trust for GovÂerÂnors Island and the City of New York, workÂing in partÂnerÂship with the NationÂal Park SerÂvice and the non-profÂit Friends of GovÂerÂnors Island, have worked to build over 43 acres of new, award-winÂning park space, creÂatÂed pubÂlic proÂgrams and comÂmisÂsioned artÂworks to welÂcome nearÂly 1M visÂiÂtors annuÂalÂly from all five borÂoughs of New York City, rehaÂbilÂiÂtatÂed hisÂtoric buildÂings in partÂnerÂship with eduÂcaÂtionÂal and culÂturÂal tenÂants, and investÂed in infraÂstrucÂture to ready the Island for its next chapter.
FolÂlowÂing nearÂly two decades of planÂning and investÂment, the Trust is embarkÂing on a growth stratÂeÂgy cenÂtered on transÂforÂmaÂtive arts and culÂture, extraÂorÂdiÂnary open space, and eduÂcaÂtion and research focused on the cliÂmate criÂsis. These efforts will togethÂer advance the misÂsion of the Trust to conÂtinÂue GovÂerÂnors Island’s transÂforÂmaÂtion as an extraÂorÂdiÂnary pubÂlic place, supÂportÂing year-round pubÂlic access and creÂatÂing a path towards finanÂcial sustainability.
The Trust for GovÂerÂnors Island is purÂsuÂing six goals to ensure that GovÂerÂnors Island will be preÂserved and enhanced for the enjoyÂment of all New YorkÂers for genÂerÂaÂtions to come:
- Make GovÂerÂnors Island a dynamÂic and accesÂsiÂble pubÂlic place year-round, with the same vibranÂcy in the winÂter as the summer
- CreÂate a path toward finanÂcial susÂtainÂabilÂiÂty through responÂsiÂble partÂnerÂships with like-mindÂed orgaÂniÂzaÂtions and institutions
- CelÂeÂbrate and utiÂlize GovÂerÂnors Island’s unique enviÂronÂment and waterÂfront locaÂtion as a pubÂlic livÂing laboratory
- ±Ê°ù´Ç³¾´Ç³Ù±ð a diverÂsiÂty of uses that comÂpleÂment and enhance GovÂerÂnors Island’s unique character
