In 2020, the Trust for Gov­er­nors Island and the New York City Mayor’s Office announced a vision to cre­ate the Cen­ter for Cli­mate Solu­tions, a com­mu­ni­ty to accel­er­ate cli­mate solu­tions for cities on Gov­er­nors Island. In April 2023, fol­low­ing a two-year com­pet­i­tive process led by the Trust and the City of New York, The New York Cli­mate Exchange was select­ed as the anchor research and edu­ca­tion­al insti­tu­tion for this ini­tia­tive, in addi­tion to pro­grams pre­sent­ed by the Trust and the Island’s ten­ants and part­ners work­ing in climate. 

This work sup­ports the research, devel­op­ment and demon­stra­tion of equi­table cli­mate solu­tions for New York City — that can be scaled and applied glob­al­ly — by:

• Expand­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties for the research and devel­op­ment of solu­tions for resilient and healthy urban neigh­bor­hoods to ready New York City, and cities around the world, for cli­mate change.
• Attract­ing and grow­ing high qual­i­ty green jobs for New York­ers with a diverse range of back­grounds through a range of edu­ca­tion­al and train­ing opportunities.
• Cre­at­ing space for New York­ers to learn from, engage with, and play a cen­tral role in cli­mate advo­ca­cy and action.

Har­bor Cli­mate Collaborative

The Trust for Gov­er­nors Island is proud to be a key mem­ber of the Har­bor Cli­mate Col­lab­o­ra­tive, a joint ini­tia­tive between three mis­­­sion-aligned pub­lic enti­ties with sites along New York Har­bor — the Trust for Gov­er­nors Island, New York City Eco­nom­ic Devel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥EDC), and Brook­lyn Navy Yard Devel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (µþ±·³Û­¶Ù°ä). The Col­lab­o­ra­tive will be the cen­ter of a bur­geon­ing cli­mate inno­va­tion ecosys­tem in New York City.

With over $725 mil­lion in pub­lic invest­ments for the green econ­o­my at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥EDC’s Sun­set Park Dis­trict, the Brook­lyn Navy Yard, and on Gov­er­nors Island, all three part­ner­ing insti­tu­tions sup­port cli­mate inno­va­tors through pilot­ing, ten­ant­i­ng, reg­u­la­to­ry coor­di­na­tion, work­force devel­op­ment, knowledge/​data shar­ing, fundrais­ing, and facil­i­tat­ing access to City agen­cies.
