Hammock Grove Sheep
May 27—Sep 30, 2025
Hammock Grove - Hammock Grove - Hammock Grove
For the fifth straight year the Trust for GovÂerÂnors Island is proud to welÂcome a famÂiÂly of five sheep for their sumÂmer landÂscapÂing jobs. HailÂing from in Albany these sheep will spend the next five months munchÂing away on mugÂwort, phragÂmites and othÂer invaÂsive species, freeÂing up the Island’s horÂtiÂculÂture team to do more imporÂtant work. Evening, Chad, and Philip Aries, Jupiter, and Bowie are returnÂing to GovÂerÂnors Island for their fourth seaÂson and will spend anothÂer sumÂmer eatÂing invaÂsive plants in HamÂmock Grove.
The sheep proÂvide eco-friendÂly landÂscape care that ensures the area’s bioÂdiÂverÂsiÂty can thrive for years to come and allows the Trust’s horÂtiÂculÂture team to use their time and talÂents to focus on culÂtiÂvatÂing an immerÂsive, cliÂmate resilient, ecoÂlogÂiÂcalÂly benÂeÂfiÂcial open space where all New YorkÂers are able to learn from and reconÂnect with nature. Sheep are also uniqueÂly suitÂed to the work on GovÂerÂnors Island, more so than goats or othÂer aniÂmals, since their culiÂnary tastes do not include tree bark. The sheep eat around the young trees in HamÂmock Grove and focus on phragÂmites and othÂer delÂiÂcaÂcies, while goats would devour virÂtuÂalÂly any plant life they could get their hooves on — invaÂsive or not.
Since this proÂgram first startÂed in 2021 the sheep have eatÂen through more than 15 acres worth of invaÂsive plant species. This work freed up thouÂsands of work hours for the human beings that make up the GovÂerÂnors Island horÂtiÂculÂture team, allowÂing them to focus on more imporÂtant tasks. That includÂed buildÂing and landÂscapÂing new pathÂways in HamÂmock Grove that visÂiÂtors to the Island can enjoy, among othÂer items.
SevÂerÂal pubÂlic engageÂment opporÂtuÂniÂties will be held on GovÂerÂnors Island in partÂnerÂship with Friends of Tivoli Lake PreÂserve and Farm with dates to be announced.
